Job vacancy Senior Scientist (PostDoc)

We are looking for a highly motivated candidate to work with us in the European BIODIVERSA / JPI project "ReVersal - Restoring peatlands of the nemoral zone under conditions of varying water supply and quality”.

Postdoc position on ecological and stakeholder processes in peat bog restoration

The main objective of the joint project funded within the call “Conservation and restoration of degraded ecosystems and their biodiversity, including a focus on aquatic systems” is to develop a spatio-temporally explicit indicator system for peatland restoration success across peatland sites and across spatio-temporal scales.

The prospective candidate will work in an international and interdisciplinary team and will be working in an integrative work package, overseeing in situ greenhouse gas flux measurements and peat analyses. The main task of the candidate is to develop a decision support system fed by data on peat properties, hydrology, vegetation as well as socio-economic drivers of peatland management. This decision support system will define ecological thresholds and tipping points to substantiate trade-offs in peat bog restoration.

Close collaboration will be with paleoecologists, soil biogeochemists carrying out gas flux measurements, hydrologists as well as vegetation and microbial ecologists and remote sensing specialists. The candidate will publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present them at conferences. We are looking for an excellent candidate who wants to apply information from ecology, hydrology and biogeochemistry to different socioeconomic settings to implement a decision support system. The candidate should possess a doctorate in an integrative environmental science as landscape ecology, geography or agricultural sciences. Knowledge in the implementation of stakeholder processes and decision support systems, documented by publications in this research field is desired. A thorough understanding of ecological processes in peatlands, peatlands management and nature conservation is appreciated.

The candidate should demonstrate a keen interest in the nexus between ecological and social sciences, especially in the field of ecosystem restoration and should be willing to perform field work in several European nations. Candidates should be willing to travel to sites, interact with the international team both in presence and via remote communication, and local stakeholders. The candidate should possess a valid driver’s licence. Fluency in spoken and written English is required, as well as excellent team skills.
