Helley-Smith Sampler

The Helley-Smith sampler is suitable for the determination of bed load transport, especially in streams or smaller rivers. The material goes through the 7.6 x 7.6 cm opening into a 250 micron mesh bag.

Example: The amount can then be determined as follows: Sb = Ks (1-p) V / (bT) or Sb = G / (bT)

k = calibration factor

p = porosity factor (= 0.4)

s = density of sediment particles (= 2650 kg / m 3)

V = volume G = dry matter (kg)

b = width of the inlet cross-section (= 0.0762 m)

T = sampling time (s)
